Tuesdays starting July 6, 3:30 - 4:30 pm – Mercy Barrial, Instructor
Dance Sessions — A high energy introduction to dance as a form of release and self-expression through movement. Students will experience different genres of dance including jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop, with an emphasis on building their confidence to improvise or freestyle in the movement style most uniquely comfortable to them. Class will include warmups, progressions, choreography combinations, and skill-building, all aiming to build their body coordination, musicality, movement vocabulary, body alignment, and spatial awareness.
Wednesdays starting July 7, 3:30 - 4:30 pm – Rolanda Johnson, Instructor
Financial Literacy Sessions — These sessions will teach fundamental skills to help establish healthy financial habits. Foundational topics that will be discussed will include: the history of the U.S. Banking system, understanding various payment options available while making transactions in commerce, simple interest vs. compound interest, sales tax vs. income tax, creating household budgets, and savings and investing. Parents and/or guardians are invited to join the Financial Literacy sessions along with their students.
Thursdays starting July 8, 3:30 - 4:30 pm – Jared Brown, Teaching Artist
Art Sessions — The OTP (Off The Pews) and YBA (Youth Board of Artists) partnership is a four session program for teens to mentor middle schoolers about the artworks at the Art Center, particularly Faheem Majeed’s exhibition. Teens will meet virtually to provide gallery experiences, activities, and conversation to create a culminating piece. This program is an opportunity for OTP students to learn about local artists and about the Hyde Park Art Center and its history in the Southside, and want to help share it with their community. In addition, this is a community service opportunity for YBA students and high school participants will gain service credit during the summer.
Zoom details will be provided as the program progresses.
